The Hawker Hunchback was a twin-engined fighter developed by Hawker Aircraft Limited in the early 1930s for the UK Royal Air Force (RAF). The Hunchback, as it was called, was a revised version of the British-built Fairey Swordfish biplane fighter. Intended to complement the design, the prototype flew in 1934. Unfortunately the Hunchback was not developed beyond the prototype stage, but one, with the fitting of new wings, is preserved at the Museum of Aeronautics in Bournemouth, England.
Design and development
In the early 1930s, Hawker Aircraft Ltd built several designs for the Royal Air Force under licence, including the Fairey Swordfish. The Swordfish was developed as a replacement for the ageing Fairey Fox and was a twin-engined biplane, powered by two Napier Lion radial engines. The prototype was flown in 1931, and several were built for the RAF before the aircraft was retired from front-line service in 1934.
Hawker Aircraft were not content to build the Swordfish as a satisfactory replacement for the Fox, and during the 1930s began a development of the design, calling it the Hunchback, in response to the Nighthawk built by the French firm Nieuport-Astra and the German Junkers Ju 88, the Focke-Wulf Fw 189, the Royal Air Force's previous biplane fighter, the Miles Martinet.
While the Swordfish was an old design, the Hunchback was designed from scratch by Hawker's designers, under the supervision of "Red" Hawker. The new design was a British-built version of the Swordfish, with a much improved performance due to an increase in span. In fact, a 1/4 scale model of the Hunchback was built in 1933 to test a new, even larger span, airfoil with the standard wingspan. The new design was chosen for service as the Hawker Fury, but the final design for the Fury was much more conventional than the original plan for the Hunchback. Although the Hunchback was essentially a development of the Swordfish, Hawker intended it to have a different role in the RAF's fighter squadrons. The Hawker Fury was a contemporary counterpart to the Gloster Gladiator and the 0b46394aab
