According to Dagens Næringsliv, SATYRICON frontman Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven sold 90% of his wine company, Wongraven Wines, in 2019 to Vingruppen, owned by wine and spirits producer Arcus.
Satyr's portfolio includes the popular Wongraven Morgenstern Riesling, Wongraven Alleanza Langhe Rosso and Wongraven Champagne. He blends the wines himself and works closely with the winemakers on both viticulture and vinification. In addition, Sigurd does all design development together with his network of artists and designers. The wines are produced organically, or according to organic principles.
Sales have more than quadrupled since 2015, and in the 12 months ending last December, Norway's liquor and wine monopoly Vinmonopolet sold nearly one million liters of wine from Wongraven. The brand is thus the tenth largest in the Norwegian market.
Despite Wongraven Wines being majority-owned by Vingruppen, all the work Sigurd Wongraven does to produce fantastic wines continues as before. Symposium Wines also continues to be responsible for the sale of the brand in Norway.
Wongraven and Roagna first met in the spring of 2003 while SATYRICON was on tour in Italy and spent several months in 2010 creating two classic wines that represented a combination of Roagna's skilled vineyard work and Satyr's vision of traditional Piedmontese wines.
Wongraven also has a number of other wine projects. He has collaborated with Baron-Fuente to make 100% organic Champagnes, and Remy and Armin Grassa to create Bordeaux-style whites.
In a 2019 interview with Wines Of Germany, Satyr was asked if it is possible to draw a parallel between the black metal scene and the wine world. He responded: "Yes, of course. The main reason I can make good blends is the experience, intuition and confidence I have when I work. I know what I want, what it requires from me, and I have vast experience in trusting the process. That is how music is made, and wine is no different, I have learned. You must have a vision and commit to it."
In 2009 Wongraven started his own winemaking business, Wongraven Wines, in Piedmont in Italy. In 2014 the company began to work with Norwegian beverage conglomerate Vingruppen, and in 2019 he sold 90% of the company to Vingruppen, in a transaction valuing the company at NOK 57 million.[3]
Equipo Navazos has established a real reputation among connoisseurs of both natural wines and Sherry for its Florpower table wine, but before those wines were released, their collaboration with Dirk Niepoort hit the shelves. Take Palomino grapes from impeccable sources, ferment, and then age under flor without any addition of spirit.
I have already mentioned this wine recently (First Impressions, 8 January), but I make no apology for doing so again. Martha made just 330 cases of this blend of Carignan (65%) and Zinfandel (35%). It wins hearts on colour alone, but the bouquet of raspberry and rhubarb intrigues and draws you in.
This Chitry is a Chardonnay from one of the Bourgogne villages allowed to add its name to the Bourgogne Blanc AOP. If you draw a line directly southwest from Chablis to the River Yonne you pass through Courgis before hitting Chitry, followed by Saint-Bris and Irancy. The terroir is all limestone here, so the wine shares a little bit of the Chablis style, and crafted by such masters, this Chitry is exceptionally good.
Usually, the negoce wines allow wild experimentation with interesting blends, and here I may need a little help. I was reliably informed that Poulprix blends Jura Trousseau with Mondeuse from Savoie and Syrah from the Rhône, and it certainly tastes like it. A vibrant, palish mid-red which almost glows, it is scented with red and black fruits, and dark cherry, the palate showing rich, ripe fruit and a nice line of acidity running through its spine. Delicious. But just as many sources claim this is Gamay blended with old Jura varieties as suggest the Jura/Savoie/Rhône source.
Wongraven Riesling Palatinate QBA dry white (bag in box) 3 liters 12% In contrast to the bottle filling, you can keep the wine without cooling after opening up to six weeks. The advantage is that the wine is not in contact with the BAG-IN box system. Sigurd Wongraven is a musician of Norway with a deep and sincere passion for wine. He develops and mixes his own wines under the label Wongraven Wines, based on grapes cultured and vinified from leading winemakers from Piedmont, Champagne and Palatinate. This dry Riesling is made of grapes grayed by small farmers in the Palatinate and vinified and selected by Wongraven Wines. The wines are then mixed by Sigurd Wongraven to make this cuvée, Morgenstern Riesling. The wine has a wide fragrance palette of citrus fruits, green apple and herbs. On the palate he is fresh, with a large depth and aromas of citrus fruits and white flowers. He has a long, refreshing finish. Although Satyr had been producing wine since 2010, the Wongraven Wines company wasn't properly founded until 2012. In recent years, the brand has become an industry leader in the singer's home country and keeping up with demand has been especially challenging. A year-over-year surge in sales has led the company to nearly quadruple profits since 2016.
Even after the majority sale to Vingruppen, who he had been collaborating with since 2014, Satyr will remain close to the winemaking process as he has all along. He will also continue working on the design front of the brand as well.
Since 2009, Sigurd Wongraven has developed and sold quality wines in Norway. From 2014 this has been in collaboration with Vingruppen. This is now being maintained in a new long-term agreement, where the wines also will be launched in new markets.
Wongraven is currently working on several other wine projects. In collaboration with Remy and Armin Grassa, known for the Chateau du Tariquet wines, he is developing a new white wine. Although the grapes are grown in Gascogne in southwest France, Wongraven is prepared to make a white wine in Bordeaux style.
One bottle of Sigurd Wongravens Barolo wine from 2006, bought it 3 years ago for around 85$, it was sold out kind of quickly, i also bought the cheaper Wongraven wine but that bottle is long gone. This is a quality wine, not that crappy AC/DC massproduced shit.
The bottle looks nice! I know nothing about wines though. Maybe I should taste more different kinds of wine and learn to appreciate them. I've only had couple of wines that tasted good and they were all red. I've also tasted some good home made wine.
"I'm going home. I got extremely sick 8 days ago and was rushed to hospital. Scans have shown that there is a blind passenger in my head. Most likely it is benign. I can live with it as long as it does not grow bigger. Removing it is extremely complicated and should only be done if it grows into a size where it is a matter of life and death. We all get our set of cards and this happened to be one of mine. There are so many people who have to deal with much worse things than I do, so I do not feel sorry for myself. I have a great family, lots of friends, Satyricon, Wongraven Wines and many people who support my endeavours all over the world. I will spend the next two weeks trying to get my strength back, then try to starting writing on the new Satyricon again and pick up where I left on all my wine projects." 781b155fdc
